Whether you are obsessed with hair and make up and know exactly what you want for your big day or you haven’t got a clue where to start, booking a bridal hair and make up artist to get you ready is one of the most important decisions when it comes to planning your wedding, having a passionate, experienced artist to do your hair and make up can make or break your day, they start the whole day and when booking a professional who knows what they’re doing, you can relax, pamper and enjoy, your wedding photos will thank you for it!

Like everything when planning a wedding, your artist should make you feel great, be attentive with responding on the run up to the day, relaxed but organised and most importantly, understand the assignment. Whether your wanting a full glam bridal look or a soft natural glow the brief should be discussed, trialed and done to perfection.

Remember like most things, if its too cheap, you may want to avoid. In my opinion you price your service at how you value yourself, your work, your training and your experience. As a professional hair and make up artist specialising in weddings, there is so much more to it than just turning up and churning out hair and make up looks on repeat. Providing the highest standard of work takes hard work, serious organisation and pure skill and the price of this should represent the professional.

Here are 15 questions you could ask your hair and make up artist to get a feel of how they work and if they would be a good fit for your wedding.

1. Are you available on my wedding date?

The earlier you start enquiring with bridal hair and make up artists the better. Id recommend no more than a year before your date. Before getting attached to an artist through their portfolio, contact them to make sure they are available on your wedding day and cover the area your getting ready at. A great way to start is asking your venue if they have a preferred artist they work with regularly and recommend, this ensures the standard of work and professional relationships have been built between the artist and the venue which is great!

2. Do you travel to my venue?

Time to clarify that your artist travels to your venue and is happy to do your whole bridal party if required. Most artists will travel and charge for mileage for the round trip, this is usually 40p per mile.

Double check they don’t have a minimum amount of people they require in order to travel out. Some artists require bridesmaids etc in order to take the booking.

How much do you charge?

Usually the price gives you an indication of the standard of work, not always but most of the time. If it feels too cheap, or too expensive, there is usually a reason. Too cheap shows there is no confidence in the artist’s work, lack of experience and possibly a shoddy job. Too expensive could indicate the artist taking advantage of the wedding industry and could result in ripping you off.

Id recommend to set a rough budget, enquire with around 10 artists you like the look of and get a feel of who you vibe with. Remember it it not JUST about their images, they have to have the whole package, organisation, punctual, passionate and can lead you to make you feel the most confident in your decisions.
